John smiled, he often did when he was trying to coax that same reaction out of Elizabeth. She rarely smiled and lately it had been his game to get her to smile at least once every time he stepped into her office. Most days he could manage it, he could flirt and she’d tease back and it would end up with them both grinning like teenagers.

Some days though, when Rodney had been particularly difficult, or nothing had gone right, or the IOA had just been breathing down her back it was a little more taxing a challenge. That’s when he pulled out the real charm or the tacky jokes. Those usually helped to loosen her up. She had such a lovely smile.

He always knew just where to find her, standing alone outside on her balcony watching the waves of the water or the twinkling of the stars. Everyone knew this was her place to be, to unwind and relax. It never failed, especially at night, the cool air and beautiful lights of the city were hard to ignore and John knew it. Which was why he was always quiet when he came out to join her, leaning on the railing beside her looking out over the ocean. It just seemed more peaceful at night for her and with John there it was twice as nice.

Your Choice - Jealous

It was just one kiss and the repercussions seemed to flit through the city like wild fire. The rumours about who and why, and even when forked off into places Elizabeth wouldn't have thought possible. Everyone knew she'd kissed someone while on a diplomatic mission, but no one seemed to know who. The popular opinions were John and Rodney, but no one seemed to take in that Rodney was disgusted and John had been jealously avoiding her since.

It was just one kiss and she hadn't even asked for it or instigated it. She wasn't interested in the man who had kissed her, not in the slightest. He was a seedy, egotistical half-wit who thought he knew how to attract women. But he couldn't hold a light up to any of the men in the city. Especially not John.

John had told her of the Earth saying, 'families come in all shapes and sizes, all walks of life and ways of living'. Whoever had said that had not met this family. Dysfunctional barely began to describe the working relationship between the various scientists and even amongst the military and civilians in Atlantis they had separated out into their own groupings. They seemed to get along, or tolerate each other to some extent, but when things were calm and light those groups of people, the boys club and the 'geek squad' as John called them were far too pronounced.

For Teyla, as an outsider, the time this family really worked best, when they really felt like a family, was to fix problems and fight for life. It wasn't the best way of having a large family like this, but it worked well for them.

John slipped past her in the middle of her conversation. She'd stopped in the corridor to talk with one of the scientists and had caught sight of him as he darted sideways across the junction, his back away from her and his arms twisted behind them. She couldn't help but notice and it sparked her interest; now she needed to know what he was hiding from her.

She excused herself from the doctor and made her way quickly to the corner and peaked around it. Her room was just down there, and she creased her brow that there was no one there. She waited, just a moment and then looked again. Her door opened and John slipped out and down the corridor away from her.

Slightly worried and very curious, she made her way to her room and stepped inside. Nothing seemed immediately out of place, until she spotted something strangely shaped sitting on her bed. She moved over and looked down at it, a chocolate bunny sat there with a piece of card propped up against it. She picked it up, looking at the delicate design of flowers and eggs on the side and the sweet and simple little note he'd left.

Happy Easter.
